I am electrical designer and i have hold lots of Autocad electrical training courses in my country.when i got informed of my students i found out that NONE of them uses Autocad electrical already!! All of them use ePLAN and other schematic softwares. AE has lots of defects that makes it so difficult to use.i dont know why Autodesk Company does not improve these defects. Here i have mentioned most of them: 1- incomplete symbol library.AE symbol library is not complete.
Lots of symbols is not available in it and a planner must create all of them 2- Three phase symbols are not grouped. When we put 3phase symbols they are not blocked and they are separated and connected with a linked line. This makes them so difficult to move and copy and etc.specially when we want to move them horizontally.i don't know why Autodesk company does not group 3phase symbols 3- can not create a blank and user-defined catalog database.in ePLAN we can create and use our own parts database but in AE there is no standard way to create a new catalogs database. 5- there is no button to backup parts database. The only way to backup a catalog database is to find its folder location and copy them!! 6- pages can not be deleted.when we create a page we only can close it and the file can't be deleted with any button.
We must go to proj folder to delete it!! 7- page names are not defined automatically 8- long time to create PDF files. For a 10 page project it takes several minutes to create a PDF file!!! 9- no standard button to re-number terminals 10- can not print whole project.
We must print pages one by one or create it to PDF 11- pages can not be shown in location view.when we specify the location of pages, the pages are not categorized by their location in project manager 12- there phase symbols.whe we put a 3 phase symbol, the AE asks us to choose ' build to right or left 'direction. Choose the left direction to see the result!! These are some problems with this software.specially the items 1 and 2 makes the user so tired to use AE.all of the companies that i know has switched to ePLAN and they don't use AE at all. The problem is most likely in the user. Items 1, 2 - disputed, points 3, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 - these functions are in the software.
ACE has undeniable advantages, but unfortunately, in the absence of adequate support from Autodesk, this software is losing more and more solutions to competitors over the years. Unfortunately, it can be assumed that with this development of ACE in a few years, it will not be the solution that you should pay attention to. I hope Autodesk management will reconsider its attitude to ACE, before it's too late. I did not want to mention a specific software.but we have to accept that AE has lots of problems.where can you find a florescent symbol?? How can you create and back up your catalog database??
How can you delete a page?? How can you move 3 phase symbols horizontally( in IEC standard)?? Have you ever tried the item 12 that i mentioned above?? Yes many people use AE but compared to other schematic software it is not easy to use.it makes the planner tired.that is why most of companies around here has switched to eplan and other softwares. The problem is not a very good knowledge of techniques for working with ACE on Your part. I also work with EPLAN. I can say that the main difference EPLAN from ACE that EPLAN intensively develop, and ACE develop very slowly.
But considering how much attention is given to EPLAN from the developer, this program is not without drawbacks. Many of the things in ACE are made more convenient and simple with the same result. But if you look in General, then of course at the moment EPLAN is more effective in providing more opportunities. You write your messages for advertising EPLAN, or you will ask questions about work with ACE?
It is a forum ACE, not EPLAN. This forum, like most, is ostensibly about users helping users. Do you have a specific question with which we can help?
The proper arenas for roasting someone's product are generally not found in the forums where people who use that product gather to share knowledge. If you don't like ACADE, don't use it. If you need to use it, we'll all pitch in and help you along.
Pretty sure we could all do without so much bellyaching though. If, like other users on this board, you just want to push another company's product for them.I would remind you that 99% of the people on this forum don't get to choose what software they have to use in their daily work. And posts like this one do nothing but take up those people's time when they come here to figure things out. So, that said, how can we help you today? Funny, I am reminded of a friend long ago where Macintosh was introduced into her office as a work tool. She spent the time to learn the machine over several years.
She changed offices and had to learn Microsoft for the work flow there. She learned it and worked with it for several years. One day I asked her which OS she liked the best. Her response, “Using the Mac is like driving a Cadillac. It is a comfortable ride, automatic tranny and power steer and it takes care of a lot of stuff for you. Nice drive through the country. The MS is more like a sports car.
Small seating, six speed manual with rack and pinion, 16 inch tires with 10 inch disk brakes because it needs them. You can go like your hair is on fire but if you don’t pay attention you will blow the engine and leave the tranny bit and pieces all over the roadway.” So, in conclusion, I guess AE or another software, just depends on how you want to drive I guess. Just my two cents worth Good luck.
I wold strongly suggest that you evaluate Eplan along with a couple of others. While Acad is/was the standard for mechanical drawings. Electrical is different. If you have no legacy, Acad Electrical doesn't bring anything to the party as such. Research and choose.:) Cheers from: Jeremy Pollard, CET The Caring Canuckian!

Are your drawings going to be completely new designs (from a blank page), or are you going to be modifying existing drawings (retro-fits)?
If you are mainly changing existing drawings, then there isn't a lot of point to using an automated drawing package. The automated packages have their advantage when you are doing a lot of drawings from scratch. The reason why people use AutoCAD is simply to be able to work with the proprietary DWG file format which so many existing drawings are in. As a CAD package, AutoCAD itself isn't actually very good (I am speaking of the CAD package in general, not the Electrical version). If you go to the AutoDesk web site, you can buy AutoCAD Electrical from there for $5,295.00. I think that's a lot of money unless you are doing a.lot. of drawings where you can use it's features.
AutoCAD LT is $1200.00 (which is several times what they used to charge for it). Unless you know that you have a lot of drafting work lined up in advance, you might want to consider conserving your capital until you are better established.

Try shopping around for a cheaper general 2D drafting package from someone else which can still work with DWG files (the file format has been reverse engineered by several other companies). If you don't need DWG compatibility, there is even more choice for a very small fraction of the price.
AutoCad Electrical does help you out with having electrical symbols and keeping track of device tags and interruption points as well as doing automatic wire numbering. I find that you have to constantly verify and correct wire numbers and device tags. It is not worth the money. E-plan P8 is a great piece of software but you need to invest the time to learn it properly then use it on a regular basis.
Technical support is generally good. If you are doing drawings on a regular basis you will definitely save time especially in large drawing sets. I bought ePlan compact for $500 two months ago. It is nice, but extremely cryptic! There is absolutely noting intuitive about it! But, as I used it, I do like it.
With the compact version, you are limited to 20 pages. As for price compared to AutoCad electrical: ePlan is horrifically expensive! I would rate it above AutoCad Electrical, but I cannot justify the cost for the Select or Professional versions.
As I told my sales person, ePlan is good, but not that good as to cost 50% more that ACAD-e. Don't get me wrong, I would highly recommend ePlan against AutoCad-e were it not for the price. In these times, it simply cannot be justified. Village life hacked apk. Also, ePlan uses a Dongle instead of activation files.
(At least my version does.). I recommend Eplan. Our company has been using it for many years now. Some versions are more expensive than ACE, however because of the speed that you can produce schematics, you very quickly make back any difference.
It is a very comprehensive program, so you do need training. Even after 7 years I keep finding new ways to save time. If you use Eplan P8 then it is compatible with XP, Vista, W7. The latest version (2) has over 1000 new features, but you can run the program in beginner mode so that you don't get swamped.
